The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) community mourns the loss of Anna Simmons, a devoted student and accomplished athlete whose life was marked by academic excellence, athletic prowess, and a commitment to community service.
Anna, originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, was pursuing a major in Computer Science and Engineering at MIT. Her academic journey was distinguished by her involvement in significant research projects, including a UROP through the MIT Energy Initiative, where she studied the impact of mergers and acquisitions on power plant efficiency.
Additionally, she contributed to the Device Research Lab, focusing on condenser technology aimed at enhancing energy efficiency in power plants. Beyond her academic endeavors, Anna was a vital member of the MIT Field Hockey team.
Throughout her tenure, she played in numerous games, demonstrating her skills and dedication on the field. In the 2023 season, she participated in 14 games, starting in one, and recorded six assists, showcasing her teamwork and strategic play.
Her performance earned her several accolades, including being named to the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship Team in 2023 and the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team in both 2022 and 2023. She was also recognized on the NFHCA National Academic Squad during these years and was honored as an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction in 2022.
Anna’s impact extended beyond academics and athletics. She was an active participant in various campus organizations, reflecting her diverse interests and leadership qualities. As a member of the Little Beavers Running Club, she shared her passion for running with fellow enthusiasts.
Within the Sigma Kappa sorority, she held roles such as House Manager and Intramural Chair, contributing to the sorority’s operations and fostering a sense of community among her peers.
Anna’s favorite sports memory was the NCAA tournament game against SUNY Cortland, where the team’s energy and cohesion left a lasting impression on her. She also cherished moments of camaraderie, recalling with fondness the time a teammate brought a bag of apples into the locker room, exemplifying the close-knit environment she valued.
